Day at Sandown

As you may or may not have seen (I was live tweeting on Twitter) I attended Sandown park for the first time on Friday 2nd December for the first day of Tingle Creek and I can honestly say it was a great day out. Travelling from central London it was a perfect destination as it’s located only 20 minutes train ride from Vauxhall station. Esher station is the closest station to the racecourse and it practically backs onto the racecourse. Top tip, when you get off the train turn right and walk up the platform, many of us made the mistake of first turning left. The walk isn’t even 10 minutes, you walk along a path at the end of the platform then turn left into the entrance of the racecourse and walk across the track and through the middle of the course to get to the Grandstand.

This was my first time at Sandown Park and I was lucky enough to have a Premier ticket for the race day, thanks to Sandown, so I could explore the place before the first race. Its always good to do this if it's your first time at a track, so you know where everything is. I picked up a race card and grabbed a pint from the Chasers Bar then made my first bet (which I won). I decided to make all my bets individually before each race because there was plenty of time to do so. I also had £2 on the jackpot totepool, wish I hadn't because 4 out of 6 won and the other two placed, wasn’t the best feeling when I gave it to the guy on the other side of the desk and he said “if you had gone for place rather than jackpot you’d be walking away with a nice bit of money”, but at least I’ve learnt my lesson, go for both that is.

Between each race I placed a bet and then grabbed a drink from a different bar each time, I honestly believe the time in between each race is meant for this because it's the perfect amount of time to do so. Of the bars I visited the best for me was The Sandown View Bar, located on the first floor of the Premier stand it had two bars, enough room so there was no long queues, and offered perfect viewing of the racing with glass doors and windows overlooking the racecourse, especially if you’re lucky enough to get a seat by the window, I unfortunately wasn’t.

The viewing area throughout the racecourse was great, personally I enjoyed watching from the lawn in front of the grandstand, with the premier enclosure located opposite the finish line it offers a great chance to see all the action.
