It’s only a few weeks before the Breeders Cup World Championships at Del Mar, California. This is an annual series of Grade 1 races run over two days, 3-4th November 2017, which act as a championship finale to thoroughbred racing in America. The prize money for each race ranges from $1,000,000 to $6 million. Del Mar racecourse is located in the seaside city of Del Mar, California but this event has often moved around to other racecourses such as Santa Anita, where there was the incredible showdown between fan favourite California Chrome and Arrogate last year. Arrogate edged to victory with jockey Mike Smith on board and later went on to win the Dubai World Cup, Meydan in March. Records are broken at the Breeders Cup and last year was no different with American Trainer Bob Baffert, winning the Classic for a third consecutive year. This year could be a fourth as Arrogate will be defending the Breeder's Cup title with the view to possibly retiring to stud soon after. It will be an exciting and very interesting run for all field entries.
First run in 1984, the Breeders Cup attracts the finest horses from across America and each time produces a race to remember. Some of the races to look forward to are the Classic, the Longines Turf, the Turf Sprint and the Las Vegas Dirt Mile to name a few. Two days jam packed full of thoroughbred action and amazing food, drink, glitz and glam. This is where everybody wants to be and if you haven’t been yet...you must certainly find out why and ensure you tick it off the list. Also known as the ‘Super Bowl’ of racing, this is something special for America and is booked into the social calendar months in advance.
For horses to run in the Breeders Cup they must first qualify. The first way of doing so is by winning the Breeders Cup Challenge race and the second is through a points system like many other races. This is where horses are rated by their performance from major races throughout the year. A maximum field of 14 horses are allowed to start in each of the Championship races however, only 12 are allowed to start and run in the Dirt Mile. The Classic is regarded as one of the four main races which make up horse racing’s Grand Slam originally a Triple Crown including the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes plus the Breeders Cup Classic. This year could see top horses of the British Flat season such as Lady Aurelia and Marsha, heading over to prove their form and take the title.
