Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe - Race Preview

After two years away at Chantilly the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe returns to ParisLongchamp. Enable is aiming to emulate Treve in winning consecutive Arc’s after winning last year’s renewal at Chantilly. Since the Arc was last staged at Longchamp the track has undergone a considerable redevelopment with a brand new Grandstand being built. The Arc is now the richest race in Europe with a prize fund of 5 million Euros and is the fourth richest race in the world after the Pegasus World Cup and Dubai World Cup. 19 horses will go to post to contest Europe’s most prestigious race. There is a fantastic card of supporting races including five Group 1 races. Here is our preview of every Group 1 race on the card.

3.05 - Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Group 1)

The draw has historically been important for the Arc when it is at Longchamp. When the race is run on Good or Good to Soft, as it is likely to be on Sunday, 11 of the last 13 winners have come out of stalls 1-6 with another winner coming from stall 7. Golden Horn is the only winner in the last twenty years to win from a wide draw under good or good to soft conditions and that was due to a mercurial ride from Frankie Dettori. Frankie won’t have to overcome a wide draw this year as Enable is coming from stall 6. Enable is a worthy favourite having won the September Stakes at Kempton on her comeback run following 11 months off. Sea of Class is the main opposition however it may be difficult for James Doyle to weave his way through from a hold up position. For value seekers Cloth of Stars is the selection in this race. His second to Enable in last year’s race is excellent and a repeat of that run will see him go very close to making the frame.
Selection: Cloth of Stars E/W 50/1

3.50 - Prix de l’Opera Longines (Group 1)

The fillies and mares contest the 10f Prix de l’Opera and this looks like a good renewal. Nassau Stakes winner Wild Illusion is currently favourite but the form of that race looks questionable despite the trainers good record with runners in France. Preference is given to With You who’s 3rd to Alpha Centauri, with Recoletos in 2nd, in the Jacques le Marois looks the best form in the race and is sure to go very close.

Selection: With You 9/2

4.25 - Prix de l’Abbaye Longchamp Longines (Group 1)

The mercurial Battash looks for a repeat success in the Abbaye and is currently 6/4 to do so. Which Battash turns up is main conundrum surrounding this race. If we see the Battash who marmalised the field in the King George Stakes at Goodwood then he will undoubtedly win. However, if the York Battash turns up then he will surely get beaten. 6/4 could look a fantastic price after the race but the selection is for the more consistent City Light. City Light’s 2nd to Merchant Navy in the Diamond Jubilee is excellent form with subsequent Haydock Sprint Cup winner The Tin Man back in 4th.

Selection: City Light 13/2

5.00 - Qatar Prix de la Foret (Group 1)

It may be unoriginal but Polydream brings the best form to the table in this race and its is very hard to see her being overturned.

Selection: Polydream 13/8

1.20 Qatar Prix Marcel Boussac - Criterium des Pouliches (Group 1)

Selection: Pink Dogwood 10/1

1.55 Qatar Jean-Luc Lagardere (Group 1)

Selection: Boitron 6/1
