Royal Ascot midweek round up

As we head into day 3 of the Royal meeting, we reflect on what we have learnt so far!

Day 1 kicked off by reminding us this is not an easy week to pick a winner, with the favourite not even in the first three and a 33/1 outsider, ACCIDENTAL AGENT, winning the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes. An amazing win for Charlie Bishop and trainer Eve Johnson Houghton. Eve’s mum actually bred the horse so it was a very emotional win all round and what a way to kick off the meeting.

Next it was the favourites turn to come in, CALYX, who took the trophy in the Group 2 Coventry Stakes, which was the first of what would be three winners for Frankie Dettori. We then had the second Group 1 of the day, The Kings Stand Stakes. What was meant to be a match race between LADY AURELIA and BATTAASH, ended up being a winner for Goldolphin’s BLUE POINT. It looks like BATTAASH won the match race but just wasn’t the best horse on the day. Frankie then had his second winner on the day with WITHOUT PAROLE in the Group 1 St James Palace Stakes. Not only a great second win for him, but a very special presentation with Meghan and Harry presenting him with the winning trophy. He even snuck in a cheeky kiss on her hand! The second last race was the Ascot stakes, and Andrea Atzeni drove home LAGOSTOVEGAS for Willie Mullins. Lastly the final race of the day made for a hatrick for Frankie. In the Wolferton stakes, he rode MONARCHS GLEN to victory and what a ride it was too.

Day 2 was another day full of surprises and a great day for Sir Michael Stout, a remarkable achievement for an incredible trainer. He was presented with his 76th winner cloth and then did one better and won the last too! Again another big priced horse winning the first, with SIGNORA CABELLO clinching the Queen Mary Stakes at 25/1. Next was the Queen’s Vase and an unbelievable result for Aidan O’Brien training the first, second and third. It looks like Ryan made the right decision with KEW GARDENS. The Duke of Cambridge Stakes was a win for Marco Botti and William Buick with ALJAZZI. The big shocker of the day came in the Prince of Wales Stakes, where POETS WORD stormed home to beat the favourite CRACKSMAN. This was a surprise result for most but a great victory for Sir Michael which marked his 76th winner at the meeting. The Royal Hunt Cup, was next with the largest field of the day, a total of 30 runners. Anyone who picked a winner in this well done! SETTLE FOR BAY at 16/1 took the top spot from the massive field. Lastly we had the Jersey Stakes which marked a whopping 77 winners for Sir Michael and a great ride from Australian jockey James McDonald on EXPERT EYE. This rounded of a fantastic days racing.

The first two days have been everything we want from Royal Ascot and more! There have been shock wins, emotional wins and great racing - we are really looking forward to the rest of the week.
