The Triple Crown at Belmont Park

The Triple Crown is an award given to a horse of three years old, who manages to win the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes all in one year! It is considered the greatest accomplishment in thoroughbred racing and has only ever happened 13 times since 1919, most recently, this year, with JUSTIFY.

The third and final race of the Triple Crown is the Belmont Stakes which is held on the first or second Saturday in June each year. It takes place at Belmont Park in New York, one of the most spectacular racecourses you could ever visit. Located just outside of the city it is a trip of a lifetime, and one you need to add to your list!

To give you a better idea of the Triple Crown and just how hard it is to be won, 23 horses have won the first two legs and either not made it to Belmont or lost on the day. This happened most recently in 2008, 2012 and 2014 when one of the most well known horses, especially in the USA, CALIFORNIA CHROME finished in a dead heat for 4th. This makes for an incredibly exciting day on the track even if there isn’t a contender to complete the Triple Crown as the Belmont Stakes still is an incredibly high class race, with horses from all over the World coming to compete.

As mentioned the course is stunning and only a stones throw from the city making this final leg of the Triple Crown all the more worth the trip. A long weekend in New York is a popular trip, so why not combine with a visit to the Belmont? With direct flights from the UK it is extremely easy to get to, and to extend your time in New York you can fly home overnight. Your hotel is located in Long Island, a perfect location to access both the racecourse and the city for some all important sightseeing! The race meeting is held over two days but the big race is Saturday so you can choose to either visit Belmont on Friday too, or spend some time exploring the Big Apple!

This is an action packed trip in the city that never sleeps, so why not book your spot and hopefully watch the next winner of the Triple Crown!
