St Leger Festival - Day 3 Festival

Gentleman’s Day - St Leger Festival

We are now halfway through the St Leger Festival and what a week it has been so far. Today is Gentleman’s Day and it holds one of the most prestigious races of the week, The Doncaster Cup. This is the oldest race of the festival and believe it not, it is also the oldest horse race in the world which takes place under the Rules of Horse Racing! Just as is the case with Ladies Day, Gentleman’s Day hosts the Best Dressed Male competition with plenty of prizes on offer. On top of the 8 races, there is plenty of entertainment on offer for racegoers including an Oasis tribute band, a darts competition and even laser clay pigeon shooting. What is there not to like?!

Japan Racing Association Sceptre Stakes (Group 3)

The first race of the day is a fillies and mares Group race contested over a distance of 7f. LAUGH ALOUD is my pick in this race after running a very promising race at Sandown two weeks ago after a 455 day lay off. She is likely to improve for this run and having performed impressively to win last season in a Group 3 race at Epsom, she is the standout horse in this race. Not to mention, the Doyler is onboard so she is in very good hands!

Wainwrights Flying Childers Stakes (Group 2)

The first of the day is followed by yet another Group race under the shorter distance of 5f and is open to 2 year olds. I really like the looks of LEGENDS OF WAR in this one after making an extremely impressive debut at Yarmouth back in May under the ever reliable Oisin Murphy. Although it ran poorly at Newmarket, this horse has been on red hot form since and produced a brilliant run at York in a Group 2 when it was beaten to first place by Emaraaty. Priced at 6/1, I think it is definitely good value and worth a few quid!

Doncaster Cup Stakes (Group 2)

The Doncaster Cup at 3:35 is one of the standout races of the day with the favourite Thomas Hobson looking to avenge his loss in the same race last year when he came second. Although he has a good chance of achieving this, my pick for the race is SAUNTER who is a course winner when he won last year in the November Handicap. His trainer Ian Williams has also commented that this step up in trip is well ‘within his compass’. All aboard the Doyler Express...
