Where the 2000 and 1000 Guineas leaves us for the Oaks and the Derby

He only went and did it again... the winning machine Aidan O’Brien has done the double 2000 and 1000 Guineas once again with the first time being back in 2017. Aidan proved once again that he is one of the greatest Trainers of our time and one day, we will look back on this spectacle as an epic park racing history.

The 2000 Guineas was made an even more special occasion, with his son Donnacha, age 20, on board. Aidan, unlike a lot of people who believe their children should find their own way, looks after his own by giving them incredible opportunities with which they seem to excel. MAGNA GRECIA who has never finished outside the top three, maintained her perfect record and stormed home with an impressive win. It was a very close race in the closing stages, making ten 2000 Guineas for Aidan and 33 classics overall. He also made history by winning the race for three consecutive years. Next steps for MAGNA GRECIA look like the Irish Guineas then the St James Palace at Ascot, rather than the Derby, with such speed shown over a mile this will be more fitting for him.

Next was the 1000 Guineas to complete the fairytale for O’Brien. It would appear Ryan chose the wrong mount by going with JUST WONDERFUL. With HERMOSA the outside chance at 14/1, she managed to find that extra gear in the closing stages and beat the favourite QABALA who finished in 3rd. The race again was close in the final furlongs and made for an exciting finish...everything you want from a classic.

The next classic in the calendar will be the Investec Oaks and Derby, it looks likely that HERMOSA will head to the Oaks, as Aidan thinks she will be fine for the step up in trip. Also current favourite for Aidan is PINK DOGWOOD, and for Haggas, MAQSAD. The coming weeks will be telling and I am sure bring lots of change.

For the Derby, it is of course TOO DARN HOT, who is going to take all the beating but if one person has a horse to do it, it will no doubt be Aidan that pulls something special from his box of tricks, with second favourite his horse JAPAN we look forward to what is set to be an exciting two days at Epsom.
