Royal Ascot Press Morning 2019

The Thursday before Ascot is the annual press morning for Royal Ascot. Ascot Racecourse put this on for all of the media for a few reasons. First to see the international runners that are stabled in Newmarket run on the gallops and interview their trainers to get an insight into what your thoughts are for the weeks racing ahead. Secondly to interview the local trainers in Newmarket who have runners at Ascot. We got to hear all about how their preparation is going and confirm runners, non-runners and choices of jockeys.

After a rainy morning in Newmarket for the Royal Ascot press morning, we are here to report back to you all the news. The morning saw some of the international horses; who have come from far and wide, stretch their legs on the gallops. Plus, we heard some interesting interviews from their Trainers, John Gosden, William Haggas, Sir Michael Scoute, and Frankie Dettori.

Starting with Frankie Dettori, he first spoke about his hopes with STRADIVARIUS who he reported “is feeling very fresh and doing well. He has become the people’s horse” he spoke of his strength and said “he won’t go down without a fight and that’s why we all love him”. He said what an honour winning the gold cup is “The Queen only comes down and presents the prize for two races and it’s very special”

He then spoke of TOO DARN HOT a horse he says “We have got him where we want” however, did comment on the fact that he did not stay in the Dante, but thinks he has more to give, he is looking very well and hopes he will be back in tip top form at Ascot.

Lastly, Frankie said the Kings Stand Stakes could be the best of the meeting if all the horses currently entered turn up. He will ride American trained IMPRIMIS who has an impressive form over in America and has never run in the UK. He will be looking to take on the mighty BATTAASH trained by Charlie Hills.

Frankie will be on the ITV Opening Show on Wednesday 19th to give his views on the day.

First from the international runners was Toby Edmonds trainer of HOUTZEN who he told us was meant to be called Doutzen but due to an autocorrect on text there was a mix up in the names, he says the horse is settled in well and they are very hopeful.

Next on stage was New Zealand trainer Michael Pitman, who after telling us how he’s cheated death more than once, with a recent battle with cancer and being hit by a car a few years ago, there weren’t many dry eyes in the room. Michael who said to have a runner at the Royal meeting was on his bucket list, but so was going to the moon! He is also giving David Egan the leg up on the horse as he believes in giving youngsters a chance. For this horse to win on Tuesday, would be an emotional one which will have many wiping their eyes!

Fellow New Zealand trainer Stephen Gray will saddle LIM’S CRUISER in The Diamond Jubilee on Saturday 22nd.

Finally, of all the international trainers, we heard from Mitsuru Hashidawho from Japan and  trainer of DEIRDRE. He said the horse has settled in well here but they are really looking forward to see how they compare against the European horses on the turf next week.

We then hear from our English trainers, first up was John Gosden. He said TOO DARN HOT was in great form, and he’s the happiest he has been with him all season. He also told us MEHDAAYIH will not run in the Ribblesdale stakes and PRIVATE SECRETARY will run in the King Edward VII on Friday 21st. When quizzed on a possible 2yo runner he was very coy about a horse he’s running the Coventry called LIGHT ANGEL which is a huge price so worth checking the antepost if you fancy a bet.

Sir Michael Stoute reported that CRYSTAL OCEAN will run in the Prince of Wales Stakes. He made the comment that he is in great shape and that this is a very tough race so is not getting any hopes up but looks forward to how everything will unfold. He also saddles JUBILOSO in The Coronation Stakes on Friday, although he thinks this may come a bit too soon for her, and Aidan O’Brien trained HERMOSA will be tough to beat.

JUBILOSO- The Coronation Stakes Friday 21st

William Haggas was the last of the trainers for the morning who was not giving much away as usual. SEA OF CLASS is running in the Prince of Wales Stakes and Haggas is hoping that Charlie Appleby trained MASAR, won’t be running so that James can ride her as he is contracted to Godolphin otherwise. James will however, be riding SKARDU in the St James’ Palace, he said the horse has a bit to find but he thinks the round track will suit him well. William also saddles a runner for the HM the Queen which he says is very special at the Royal meeting. He enters MAGNETIC CHARM who will run in the Coronation Stakes. FRANKELLINA, Williams says has come out from Epsom very well and is on great form, she will run in The Ribblesdale. Finally PABLO ESCOBAR will run in the King Edward VII stakes.
