Laytown Races are truly one of a kind. Taking place on the sandy Irish coast, the meeting is 150 years old. It has seen some of the greatest jockeys take to the saddle like Mick Fitzgerald and has even had a BBC documentary made about it. Races take place annually in September and attracts more than 5000 visitors. The racing itself is run under the same rules as any other racing meeting and normal procedures apply, it’s just the only difference is that it takes place on a beach!

All the races are flat but the riding weights have been increased slightly to open it up to jump jockeys too. Rules and regulations are in place as they are with any other race meeting, but it is truly one of a kind, bucket list trip. You will not experience anything quite like it; unless you fly to Australia for the Goldcoast Beach Race, but seeing as that is quite a distance to go, why not pop over to Ireland instead?

Much like the extreme racing in St Moritz, Laytown had to rely on the natural elements in order to be able to go ahead. The main decider in when the races start and finish is the Tide. As you can imagine, there is only a limited window for when the racing can take place before the Tide comes in.
