Goodwood Festival Review

The Qatar Goodwood festival, otherwise known as Glorious Goodwood, is one of the biggest flat racing events in the UK and is often hailed as the ‘Home of Champions’. Held at the beginning of August in the height of the british summer, the 5 day festival is not only a standout sporting highlight, but also a social one. Offering a great occasion which combines action with style it’s no surprise to hear that celebrities such as Tom Cruise, Zara Phillips, Pixie Lott and many others have all been spotted in attendance at this glamorous event in the past. Situated in the picturesque countryside of west sussex, Goodwood is often hailed as the most beautiful racecourse in the United Kingdom, with the grandstand looking out onto not only the great racecourse but also the rolling hills of the British countryside.

The Goodwood Festival is set over a whole week and each day includes a great reason to head along - the £1 million Qatar Sussex Stakes on Wednesday, the glamorous Ladies Day on Thursday (add link to our ladies day blog), four world class Group races on Friday and the concluding Steward’s cup cavalry charge on Saturday.

The opening day of the festival, the Tuesday, hosts another flagship event in the form of the Magnolia Cup. The charity race is contested by 12 fearless ladies, all leading figures in business, and having run for 6 years now, provides a glamorous and enthralling opening to the festival. The festival is also home to two of the UK's 31 Group Flat races, the Sussex Stakes and the Nassau Stakes.

Goodwood Racecourse itself is one of the more complex courses in the UK with many undulations the right handed track which tends to favour horses that run close to the pace of the front. Frankie Dettori is the top current jockey at the Goodwood festival with 62 wins at the prestigious event.

Goodwood Festival always offers a feast of incredible races attracting the best equine stars in the world accompanied by the biggest names in the sport. Winners at the Festival in recent years include the likes of Highland Reel, Big Orange, Frankel, Minding and many more. Away from the racing Goodwood offers a spectacle of live music, fashion, glorious weather and food and drink which all provide an excellent showcase of a quintessentially British atmosphere.
