The Derby- What makes it so special

If you have been watching the racing this week from York you will be hearing the words The Derby non-stop! What makes it so special, well in short it just is, it’s the Derby, it’s the race of history, it’s the one they all want to win and for anyone in the sport it’s a career defining win. Jockeys and trainers will be described as a Derby winning Jockey, or a Derby winning trainer, there is not greater prize or race to win, yes the money is great but for them it is more the achievement of winning. To win the Derby is not easy and that is why it’s so special, the track is undulating and long and it takes a certain type of horse with an experienced jockey to partner a win. The breeding side which plays a huge part in this, as the race is over a mile you need a horse with stamina. This is something they get from their breeding, you will hear the names GALILEO, CAPE CROSS, SEA THE STARS and HIGH CHAPARREL often mentioned all are previous Derby winners and have all managed to produce great staying horses and three Derby winners between them. So you need the right trainer, jockey and horse and even then it can still prove difficult to get it right, and that’s what makes it so special!

With two weeks to go we will be focusing on the big day and not forgetting The Epsom Oaks which is the fillies equivalent, run on the Friday. We are very excited to be attending Breakfast with the Stars in Tuesday, if you haven’t heard of this before it’s a fantastic morning at Epsom where Derby hopefuls get a chance to run their horses on the track for a piece of work, we will be heading down to hear exclusive interviews and taking videos, so you can get the inside scoop!

If this sounds like your cup of tea we have a great competition where you can win the chance to be there! Check out our facebook page to find out more!
