Bet 365 day at Sandown

On Friday we made our way down to Sandown, in Surrey, for the Bet 365 day. For a flat racing fan this was a day which brought great excitement and a true start to the racing year. For the jumps fans the following day at Sandown was last day of what some may call proper racing! But let’s not get into that debate...well not today anyway!

My colleague and I were invited by separate groups so both had different experiences from the day. I was lucky enough to be invited by the racing syndicate MPH Racing who had three runners that day, this is rare for any owner so was a great day for the people in the syndicate to get together. Their runners were in the last three races so we thought we would stop for lunch before racing. There is a fantastic Chinese called the Good Earth in Esher, only a stone’s throw away from the course and the perfect place to start a great day. The food here is amazing and I cannot recommend it enough, I particularly recommend the Chicken Satay, which I think I ate my weight in!

After a great lunch we headed to the races and arrived just before the first. Hugo Palmer who trains all three of the syndicates horses had a runner in the first with our ambassador Jim Crowley on board, so we headed onto the course to cheer him home! He ran well and came in 4th and I think they were all pleased!

The course was looking great and ready for the day, the Moet and Chandon champagne bar was already filling up and I can imagine it would be a great place to nestle in for the day, overlooking the paddock and in a nice little sun trap I could see myself never moving! There was also some great food and drink stands as you walk in, if you don’t have time to grab lunch on the way!

After the race we headed up to see the rest of the syndicate who were in the Royal Box for the day, the Royal Box is lovely and very big which is great if you have a big group, it over looks the finish line and is in a great spot to see all the action!

While one of us was in the Royal Box, the other was in the 1750 box, I must say I think this is my favourite box at any of the courses, it’s very modern unlike others and is nice and bright but keeps with the style of the Jockey Club so doesn’t feel out of place.

Oh and Out and about Olly even turned up! He heard about the free drinks!!

The food in both boxes was amazing and you can never fault Jockey Club catering, we had amazing service all day and as you can see a very nice afternoon tea! Although neither of us were very lucky the syndicates horses all ran well with a very close first they were all pleased. Sandown is a super easy to drive to and even easier by train out of London so make sure it’s on your list this year! There are some cracking evening racing as well as music nights throughout the summer months so it’s a great excuse to nip out of work a little early and have some fun in the sun
