York Ebor Festival - Day 1 Preview

The first day of the Ebor Festival means only one thing…. I will be losing money! Apart from that though it also marks the start of 4 days of top class racing at the picturesque York racecourse. Day 1 plays host to 3 group races, with the Juddmonte International Stakes being the feature race of the day, won in the past by greats like Giant's Causeway, Sea the Stars and Frankel.

Tattersalls Acomb Stakes (Group 3)

The first Group race of the day takes place at 2:25 and was won last year by Wells Farhh Go. This year WATAN goes into the race favourite after an impressive debut win at Goodwood, however at 2/1 that price is too short for me. My pick would be PERSIAN MOON who won last time out at this track and is trained by Mark Johnston who has good form at York, at 5/1 this price is a lot more appealing.

Betway Great Voltigeur Stakes (Group 2) (Colts & Geldings)

The next Group race of the day takes place at 3pm and was were Cracksman began his incredible season last year winning the race by 6L. CROSS COUNTER goes into the race favourite at 15/8 looking to complete a hat trick of wins after an impressive 4.5L win at Goodwood beating Dee Ex Bee in the process. He will however have tough opposition in KEW GARDENS and WELLS FARHH GO, the later of whom has a St Leger entry and won at this meeting last year, at 5/1 my bet in this race is WELLS FARHH GO.

Juddmonte International Stakes (British Champions Series) (Group 1)

This years renewal of the Juddmonte International Stakes could be one of the most competitive yet with 7 out of the 8 runners having won a Group 1 race in their career. POETS WORD heads the market for the race having won 3 on the bounce beating Cracksman and Crystal Ocean in the process. James Doyle (The Doyler) is also his jockey and is currently in great form. ROARING LION is second favourite and our favourite to win the race in the office, at around 5/2 with most bookies. Both his starts this year over 1m 2f have seen him win, with one of those wins coming in the Dante at York, his last win came in the Coral Eclipse beating SAXON WARRIOR. Dubai World Cup winner THUNDER SNOW is also in this race and at 14/1 looks a great E/W bet.

The only certainty I have is that this race should be one to remember.
