Sandown Coral-Eclipse

Royal Ascot was an incredible week of racing but now we look on to other exciting flat fixtures this summer. Today is the start of the Coral Summer Festival with Ladies’ Day today and Coral Eclipse day on Saturday at Sandown Park Racecourse.

This race is special as it is named after a racehorse ‘Eclipse’ who was foaled in 1764 during a solar eclipse and won all of his 18 races, and then went on to have a remarkable stud career. In 1970, the Royal Veterinary College determined that 80 percent of all thoroughbreds have some trace of ancestry back to Eclipse .

The race is run over 1 mile, 1 furlong and 209 yards. The first race run in Eclipse’s memory took place in 1886 and was won by a horse called Bendigo - back then this was the richest races in Britain. The winner of this race receives £425,325 today and last year, 23 yeard old, Oisin Murphy, won the Group 1 on Roaring Lion. It is a fascinating race to watch as there is a real mixture of ages; the young taking on the older, experienced horses.

The Sandown Eclipse is a big race in the racing calendar where many of the big names come to compete. Other previous winners include the likes of GOLDEN HORN and ROARING LION, but this year is extra special as we are planning to see the return of the mighty ENABLE, who last ran in November 2018 at the Breeders’ Cup meeting; winning her race of the Breeders’ Cup Turf. Frankie Dettori has nicknamed her ‘the Big Girl’ and is looking forward to how she performs as she will be taking on a mixed field of impressive names.

The competition is hotting up with previous Derby hopeful TELECASTER, who caught all of our eyes in the York Dante. Another contender to keep an eye on in the betting ring is MUSTASHRY, who won the Newbury Lockinge back in May, he beat the mighty LAURENS and now is here to take on the great ENABLE.

Other competition stems from Sir Michael Stoute trained, REGAL REALITY who won at Sandown last time out and beat DANCETERIA who will be under Jamie Spencer in the race. He is a very good horse coming over from France, with great form having only been beaten once this year by REGAL REALITY.

Lastly, ZABEEL PRINCE, the French Group 1 winner trained by Roger Varian, to be ridden by Andrea Atzeni this winning combination has had a lot of success in the past and they will be hoping to take on the winning team of Gosden and Dettori.

This summer meeting makes for a great day out with friends and family as Sandown has so much to offer, as well as the great racing. There is something for everyone with seven thrilling races each day, fabulous fashion and style awards; with amazing prizes to win like a holiday for two to Mauritius, live DJ afterparty, and much more.

Sandown Park is one of the best racecourses in the South region and boasts incredible views over towards the city of London. It is easy to get to by road and is only a short train journey from the centre of London, so perfect for an evening racing after work on any other occasion. There are ample bars and food outlets to enjoy throughout the day as well as dining areas and restaurants if you prefer to book a table and have a relaxing meal.
